Jean Thevenon - CERTU

Long ignored by local authorities due to a lack of knowledge and skills, and sometimes seen as a “necessary evil”, goods transportation in towns is now beginning to be dealt with more seriously, especially since the general introduction of urban transportation plans (PDUs) in France. The results of the national “Urban freight” programme launched in France in 1993 are now being disseminated. Of particular interest, a simulation and assessment tool called FRETURB can be used to analyse goods deliveries and collection, and even shopping trips made by private car, in terms of quantity and space. Experimental schemes are given support and assessed with a view to drawing up a set of good practices. Several guides are aimed at providing training and information and raising awareness among decision-makers and technicians.
